INTROSPECTRAL// RMIT MFA 2026
Introspectres explores chronic illness as a vessel for close encounters with the abject body, and the psychic scars and disruption of selfhood that long-term health conditions can cause. Drawing upon the representational language of body horror cinema, hauntology and the Gothic, I examine the phenomena of invisible physical illness as an uninvited spectral presence in the body, which transgresses the perceived boundaries between ‘self’ and ‘other’. Using installation, video projection, and soundscape,this project takes the form of ephemeral environments that blend the body’s hauntographic intangibility with its fleshliness and viscera, mirroring the discordant sense of self and warped bodily relationship I have as a chronically-ill person.
